Stepan's Biocidal Formulations with EVP Claims for Monkeypox Virus

Article Updated: August 15, 2022

The monkeypox outbreak is still growing in the United States and other countries. In response, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. And on August 4, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services declared the ongoing spread of monkeypox virus a Public Health Emergency (PHE).

U.S. EPA activated the Emerging Viral Pathogens, or EVP, policy for Monkeypox virus. Monkeypox virus is an enveloped virus that belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus of the Poxviridae family.

Under the EPA’s Emerging Viral Pathogens policy, if an EVP claim is approved for a given disinfectant registration, specific off-label claims can be made in the event of an outbreak and the subsequent activation of the EVP policy. The off-label statement that references the eligible EVP virus and the directions for use for the relevant on-label virus, as outlined on the most recently approved EPA master label for the product, can be used in technical literature distributed to health care related facilities, non-label related websites, consumer information services, and social media sites. EPA has a comprehensive website regarding the EVP program, current activations, and how this program can be utilized.

An example statement for an off-label claim against Monkeypox virus for products that have an approved EPA stamped master label with EVP claim for enveloped viruses is as follows,

“{Insert Product Name here} has demonstrated effectiveness against viruses similar to Monkeypox virus on hard non-porous surfaces. Therefore, this product can be used against Monkeypox virus when used in accordance with the directions for use against {insert relevant virus from EVP table on master label for enveloped virus claim} on hard non-porous surfaces. Refer to the CDC website at https://www.cdc.gov/poxvirus/monkeypox/index.html for additional information.” Please see the most current EPA approved master label for product eligibility and for further details.
